Dowry In India
Your daughter is Precious |
India is famous for its diverse culture and immense population around the world but inside the country itself, Indian marriages are always at the top of the talk. From celebrity's marriage to the marriage of middle-class families, we Indians are always super excited about them. Most of us look at marriage as the measure of status and prestige and dowry is an undesirable byproduct of this mentality. As such marriage is about creating new relations and building new ties but gradually it has evolved as an agreement between the bride's and bridegroom's family.
Basically, dowry is cash or gifts demanded by the bridegroom's family to the bride's family during their marriage. However, the practice of dowry has been prohibited in India since 1961 but it is still practicing fearlessly in several parts of the country. According to a report of 2017 released by the National Crime Records Bureau, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh are Indian states with the maximum number of reported dowry cases. But the interesting fact is that in a country like India, where there are only 943 girls per 1000 boys, this cruelty against a girl's family during marriages doesn't make any sense. Dowry is just not limited to demanding or more ideally begging money before the marriage, but sometimes the bridegroom and his family put new demands even during the marriage day. And that's not enough even at times things gone to the level that bridegroom and his family start torturing girls in mental, emotional, and physical terms in order to exert pressure on her family for more money and gifts. For these kinds of people, the girl is just a toy to fulfill their greed. It doesn't matter how qualified the girl is but for few sick minded people she will always be a doll who comes with a lot of cash, furniture, and electronic devices.
According to the National Crime Bureau Report of 2015, in India 21 women die every day because of dowry. And these are just the reported cases the reality is much cruel than this. Dowry is a contaminated part of our society that needs to be eradicated. But the question is how this will be achieved. So before we answer this question we need to understand the fact the one who commits the crime is the culprit but the one who tolerates the crime is also the culprit. So accordingly the bridegroom and his family who demand dowry are criminals but the bride and her family who satisfy these demands are also criminals. And hence this crime needs to be stopped from both sides. As long as people are ready to sell their daughters with money, gifts, clothes, furniture, and electronic items till then things like dowry will be a part of our lives.
DOWRY CAN NEVER BUY HAPPINESS FOR YOUR DAUGHTER SO DON'T BECOME THE PART OF THIS CRIME.
Great..
